Greetings from Kerrville, Texas. I’m here in the heart of Hill Country for a few shows. Last Tuesday I flew in to San Antonio (one of my favorite cities) only to be whisked off to a hotel in San Marcos and slowly but surely travel further and further away from my beloved Riverwalk.
We did a show in San Marcos on Wednesday then went just a few miles over to New Braunfels. We did a show in New Braunfels last year and it was great to see some familiar faces. It was also nice that it was close enough to San Marcos that we got to see our host from that show again. Both shows were pregnancy center sponsored and those are generally my favorite. It is always great to work with people that share the same passion we do and know the struggles we face. Hearing the stories of their clients always inspires us to keep going. In addition, pregnancy center sponsored shows generally draw a better, more diverse crowd. If we do a show sponsored by a local church, it may be perceived as an event only for the youth of that church or denomination. When it’s a pregnancy center, the event truly is a community ordeal.
We also did tech for a fundraising banquet for the Options for Women pregnancy center in New Braunfels. Our host, Sandy, told us that the original plan was to just invite us to be their guests as a way of thanking us for the work we were doing. Well, someone suggested that we tech it so it was a lot more work than originally planned. Nonetheless it was a welcome break from our normal day-to-day show routine.
The banquet was phenomenal. Sandy spoke briefly about her testimony including her choice of abortion early in life, finding God’s grace, completing post-abortion counseling, and now serving as an Executive Director of a pregnancy center. The keynote speaker was comedian Mike Williams (http://mikewilliams.tv/). Very funny! A free dinner and comedy show made for a great night.
In addition, since we were already set up, we did the first ever morning SRT event the next day. Kids from the local Christian school were brought in and we did the entire show instead of our normal school assemblies. It was early, but great!
After the morning show it was off to Kerrville for another show on Saturday night. We got in to Hill Country Camp, both our housing and our venue, on Friday afternoon. I was walking around the campus after the sun went down when I ran into the camp director. Our exchange went something like this:
Me: Hello again (I met him earlier).
Camp Director: Hello. You know there are wild animals in these parts.
Me: Is that so?
Camp Director: Yeah. I just saw a couple deer run up the hillside.
Me: What? Oh no! Not wild deer!!! Get me outta here! I’m going back to my cabin and locking the door!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
That is all true except for the last part. I didn’t say anything. I was too busy trying not to laugh.
A few hours after that, I was still braving the wild outdoors while keeping a keen eye out for the aforementioned “wild” deer. I went to check out a bathroom facility I had noticed earlier. I was staying in a cabin with 6 other girls, 2 sinks, 1 shower, 1 toilet, and worst of all, 1 mirror. I figured if I could find another place for my morning prep routine it would be better for everyone- especially me. I was surprised to find the facilities open, but I opened the door and shined my flashlight inside (yes, I now had a flashlight with me. I thought it would be a good idea- this way I could Morse Code SOS in case of a wild deer attack.). While opening the door I was hoping that I wouldn’t encounter a skunk or scare a squirrel into charging me. I found neither of those. After I found and flipped on the light switch, I was looking to see if there were any showers when I saw it. On the floor under the last sink was a tarantula. Game over. I happily shared the sinks, shower, toilet, and mirror with the others.
We got to go to church on Sunday and had a great service at South Oaks here in Kerrville, but we had to rush out because we were facing a 10 hour drive. We stopped in Kerrville a few blocks before I-10 to fuel up while our tour manager called our hotel to get the address so we could plug it into the GPS. Our hotel was directly across the street- in KERRVILLE! He called to get directions from the gas station that was across the street! Not only that, but we found that our drive is only going to be 5 hours, not 10. So we don’t leave until tomorrow. Wow.
