Secret Swimming Spots in Yellowstone National Park

After a hot summer day full of exploration in Yellowstone National Park, nothing feels better than a swim!

Firehole Swimming Area

A turnoff for Firehole Canyon Drive can be found on the Grand Loop, just south of Madison and the West Entrance Road. The 2 mile road is one-way and one lane.

The road passes Firehole Falls and near the end of the road is the Firehole Swimming Area. There is no parking lot, but you will see many cars parked along the road. There are roadside changing booths available and stairs that lead down to the river.

This area is rocky. You won’t find a sandy beach, but you will find refreshment. Despite its name and the fact that many thermal features drain into Firehole River, don’t expect hot tub like temperatures.

Secret Swimming Spots, Yellowstone National Park

Swim at your own risk. This area is unstaffed (no lifeguard) and cliff diving is illegal. But that didn’t stop these guys.

Boiling River

The Boiling River Swimming area is located between the North Entrance and Mammoth Hot Springs and just south of the 45th Parallel.

The Gardner River mixes with the Boiling River Hot Springs in this area and creates a heated swimming hole.

Again, swim at your own risk. No changing booths here. Only a single vault toilet.

This spot is less “secret” as it can be seen from a busy park road.

Go

The swimming holes are open seasonally during the day and may close due to water levels and other concerns. Obey all posted signs.

Even if you’re not ready to plunge in, soaking your feet in the river is a great way to revitalize them between hikes.
