Last Saturday I visited my 67th National Park – Olympic National Park! I wasn’t sure what to expect. Visiting the Olympic peninsula in February could have been a terrible choice. To be on the safe side I rented a four-wheel drive vehicle and was mentally preparing for the worst. I just had to get there, see a bit, and take a hike. I was imagining it would be similar weather to what I encountered in Denali.
Instead, I was delighted to find a spring-like day with temperatures reaching the 50s and clear roads even on the mountains. I guess the 4Runner I was driving was overkill. An economy car would have suited us just fine. But at least we looked like we were ready for an adventure.
I got to share my passion for National Parks with my friend Kristen on this adventure. She was a fantastic navigator and kept me from driving too far in the wrong direction (which I started to do shortly after we left the ferry). It was great to have a travel companion or “bear bait” as I referred to her that day.
