I travel a lot. A lot. I traveled for 2 years via bus. I’ve been on a ship for well over 3 years. I love taking trains. And I fly frequently out of necessity. But I had never flown in a helicopter. Until recently.
I’ve written before about how Jamaica is not my favorite port. But as it turns out, all I needed was a change in perspective on Jamaica – a literal change in perspective.
A few of my friends and I were given the opportunity to go up in a helicopter on the Dunn’s River Falls Flight that we offer our guests. Since I had the nicest camera, I got to sit up front (totally makes the camera purchase worth it).
Our flight plan immediately took us up and over our ship, then inland across the island. I’ve been across the island a couple times now, but it looks completely different from the air. The lush green countryside and the range of blue waters were amazing.
We flew over Discovery Bay – the cove where Christopher Columbus landed. There is now a bauxite mine and processing plant in Discovery Bay. Bauxite is the main source for aluminum.
A few miles down the coast, we made our first pass over Dunn’s River Falls. If you recall I climbed these falls a few weeks back. They are much more impressive from the ground. From the air they appear to be covered in trees!
After Dunn’s River we flew over Ocho Rios harbor and the one ship that was docked there.
On the way back we passed over the falls again, but we followed the coastline home. The view of the water and the reef was absolutely amazing. To give you a little taste, I tried out my new camera in the air and shot some video of the journey.
If there are parts of earth that look this good, I can’t wait to see what heaven looks like.
